Exploring the question: Is Somatic Work in line with our Catholic Faith?

Somatic Work is a Neutral Tool, and a Safe, Faith-based approach to inner healing.

Somatics is a Neutral Tool

Somatic work—like massage or physical therapy—is a neutral, body-based practice grounded in science. It helps the body release stored stress and trauma. These practices themselves are neutral, but the experience can be shaped by the spirituality and perspective of the therapist.

Our Bodies Are Made to Heal

Somatic work aligns with the truth that God created and dignified our bodies. As the Catechism says, the body shares in God’s image (CCC 364). The exercises I teach work with our God-given design, helping release stored stress, trauma, and emotion—because God built healing into us.

Somatic work is an Application of Theology of the Body

Somatic work is a lesser-known but powerful expression of Theology of the Body. By tuning into our bodies—our sensations and emotions—we become more present to ourselves, others, and to God, who meets us in the now.

Grace Builds on Nature

As St. Thomas Aquinas teaches, “Grace builds on nature.” Healing begins in the body, where trauma and stress are held. Through gentle somatic work, we learn to feel safe within ourselves and no longer need to escape into our heads. As safety is restored, we naturally open to deeper connection—with others and with God.

A passion for healing

“The dignity of the human person is rooted in his or her creation in the image and likeness of God … the body, as a temple of the Holy Spirit, is to be respected and cared for.”(CCC 364)

Through Catholic Somatic Work, we honor the whole person by attuning to and respecting the body’s innate wisdom, guided by the Catechism’s teachings that remind us of the deep connection between body and soul.
